Sotheby’s to Auction Historic Le Mans-winning 1966 Ford GT40
Ford GT40 that was part of historical racing upset at 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans to be sold at upcoming auction.Â
As we await the 86th annual 24 Hours of Le Mans race taking place June 16-17, we love to recall some of its finest moments. One that always stands out is Ford’s first win at Le Mans in 1966, a race that showed off the thrilling MKII GT40 by completely and utterly dominating the race. Ford came to Le Mans with eight MK II GT40 racers entered. They had previously struggled on the racing circuit, and were not favored to win. But that didn’t diminish their fire and determination. It surprised everyone when the 1966 Ford GT40s took the race with a clean sweep, clinching first, second, and third place. This car, a racing legend, will be auctioned off by RM Sotheby’s at its upcoming Monterey sale on August 24 and 25 in California.
The 1966 Ford GT40 chassis number P/1016 placed third at Le Mans and also competed at 24 Hours of Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring. Powered by a 427 cubic-inch engine, this powerful beast is still pristine in its sleek gold livery.
The historic racer is expected to fetch a very hefty price tag, and deservedly so. Check out more of this winning speed demon in the gallery bellow.
