Re-bodied MX-5 Miatas Offer Classic Italian Styling At MX-5 Prices.

For less than a new Honda Accord, you can have a vintage-inspired sports car.

There’s a contingent among us who aren’t quite in the 1%. We gaze longingly at Italian classics, pondering their textures and sounds, knowing we may never be able to experience such icons in this life. Or the next. Or the one after that.

But what if you could have all of that swoopy flair without the extra commas in the price tag? Well, that’s where the humble MX-5 Miata steps in. Yes, the Miata. It may regularly be the punchline to a few jokes, but there’s no mistaking the success of this little sports car. And arguably, there’s no arguing about the new shapes being created around it.

That’s where Simpson Design comes in and saves the day. Not only do they make re-bodied MX-5’s that look like Italian exotics, but also some of the most iconic British coupes as well. They start with what looks like either an NA or NB chassis Miata, strip it of all the factory body work, and then create their own inspired masterpieces.

Obviously, some parts of the car have to remain MX-5, such as the structural parts around the windscreen, but everything else is up to the imagination of the designer. We particularly like the Aston Martin inspired green coupe, which reportedly goes for an astonishingly reasonable $25,000, and proportionally looks the best. Other designs look good as well, such as the GT Lusso style coupe and even the California inspired cabrio.

It begs the question as to why Mazda never made the Miata in a coupe version, because these designs are very, very handsome.
