Porsche Confirms New GT2 RS With at Least 650 Horsepower

Porsche’s new turbocharged GT2 RS is coming, and will be PDK-only.

Porsche has allowed just one international automotive journalist, Kyle Fortune of TopGear and Evo, the opportunity to sit in the passenger’s seat of the prototype of their upcoming 911 GT2 RS. Even though he wasn’t allowed to drive the car, Fortune was given plenty of information about what to expect when Porsche’s newest monster arrives later this year.

GT2 RS

Like the GT3 RS that came before it, this new GT2 RS is intended to be a track-dominating beast. The aerodynamic downforce will not be inconsequential, and there are a pair of NACA ducts on the front lid to force feed cooling air to the standard carbon ceramic brakes. With lots of motorsport-derived parts, this new GT2 RS will feature a suspension setup more in common with the GT3 Cup car than any road car Porsche has ever built. It’s a badass monster of a car, whose middle name is “Domination.”

The 911 Turbo S is currently the most powerful 911 variant, with 580 horsepower on tap from a 3.8 liter flat six. This GT2 RS will crib that same engine, but will make use of different turbochargers, different intercoolers, some more stout internals, and “water spray” (it’s not clear if that means BMW M4 GTS-style water injection, or a water sprayer for the intercooler to lower intake charge temperatures). All told, they’ll bump that power number another 70 units or so, to at least 650 horsepower.

Not only is power way up, but weight is way down, with sources saying the new GT2 RS will come in under 1,500 kilograms (about 3,300 pounds). The glass will be made of thinner but stronger “Gorilla” to cut weight, and there will be a Weissach option to shed a further 30 kilograms with magnesium wheels, a titanium roll cage, and a carbon fiber roof.

It’s fair to say that Porsche is really serious about getting their production-car Nurburgring lap record back from Lamborghini.
