Project Stork Wrenching Begins With a Setback

Project Stork Wrenching Begins With a Setback

By -

With the Stork sitting for 15 years, everything is a little more difficult.

Every project car has to start somewhere, and with Project Stork, our friends over at Rennlist have decided to start small. With the car up on a lift at the Haynes Manuals facility, the work can really begin. They’ve started by replacing the car’s battery and putting it on a CTEK battery maintainer, which is honestly a great place to start with an old car. Manuel Carrillo III (TeamSpeed’s managing editor), whose pregnant mom was driven to the hospital in the 911 S, has done a bit of testing and fettling with some electrical systems, and found out what does and does not function properly. Sadly, the car’s engine does not want to turn over.

The good news here is that the Carrillo family must have, at some point, committed an oil change and a set of new spark plugs to the car before putting it into storage for 15 years. There is a distinct lack of sludged oil, and the plugs appear to have been brand new and not subjected to the stresses of use. The hope here is that the engine will not turn over because the piston rings have corroded to a point that they cannot move from their placement in the cylinder. That’s a distinct possibility, though it could also be something much more sinister. The life of the car before it was socked away is a little murky, and Manuel can’t seem to recall the exact circumstances of this Porsche’s internment.

Even if the engine does free up with some penetrating oil, we’d like to suggest a proper engine rebuild in either case. An engine like this one will have developed myriad oil leaks and needs to be dropped out of the car for a proper re-seal anyhow. Rather than trying to get the engine to turn over, it’s time to get everything disassembled and checked out for proper functionality.

We’ll be following along closely!
