Can a Third Turbo Make Your McLaren Sports Car a P1 Killer?
Matt Farah takes this triple-turbocharged Hypercar Developments McLaren out for an exciting spin. Is it worth the cost of entry?
This wild McLaren started life as a simple MP4-12C Spyder, but thanks to Hypercar Developments, it now makes a whopping 1,200 horsepower on race fuel, and has downforce comparable to McLaren’s monster P1 hybrid hypercar. This particular car was built as a showcase vehicle for a client intending to race it in time-attack, but Hypercar Developments can build a similar setup on a very stock-looking McLaren. Matt Farah seems to really like the thing, and that counts for something, right?
It may not seem like it at first glance, but this is actually the bargain of the hypercar performance market. For example, you can purchase a McLaren 12C coupe on the used market for just over six figures, and then have a similar car to this one built on top of it, and still only be into the car for about a quarter-million. If you can bully P1s on track for a fraction of the cost, that makes it a bargain, right?
Outside of the additional turbocharger, this car has also been fitted with a roll cage, a wild active aero kit for the rear wing, and a P1-style nose to help balance the car’s aero. It only makes sense that this car would be fitted with larger and stickier Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires because there is hardly any other tire that could handle this kind of power. Add a few motorsport-inspired touches like quick-removal bodywork, and you’ve got the makings of a really exciting car.
