McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Go Head-to-Head at Auction
As two of the Holy Trinity of hypercars head to auction, the question is, which one would you pick?
The term “hypercar” has been floating around for quite some time, but 2013 was the year things got really interesting. 2013 was the year Porsche, McLaren, and Ferrari all dropped one at the same time. Each of the trinity had their own take on hybrid technology and all 3 left everything else behind with their performance figures. The Ferrari LaFerrari, Porsche 918 Spyder, and McLaren P1 created a lot of discussion as both the media and groups of enthusiasts in pubs tried to figure out which was the best.
Now, as a McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder head for sale at RM Sotheby’s Petersen Museum Auction 2018, Auto Classics posed the question: Which is the better auction buy?Â
It’s a very good question and, no doubt, one leading to some animated discussions in bars and pubs. AutoClassics doesn’t give a definitive answer, but we do agree with the conclusion that it depends what the buyer wants from the car.  Both the Porsche 918 Spyder, and McLaren P1 being sold are from the same year and both have mileage on the clock measured in the low hundreds. The P1 is in a vanilla specification while the 918 is dressed in Martini race livery and specced with the very desirable Weissach Package.
The instinctive move would be to go for the Porsche for its extra specification and flair as a collector’s piece, however, McLaren only made 375 production models of the P1 and this number 233, whereas Porsche made 918 production models of its hybrid hypercar. For that reason, we agree with AutoClassics’ conclusion that the P1 would probably be the better investment choice in the long run. Although, we would salute anyone that bought either and drove them as intended.
