1974 Volkswagen Baja Super Beetle

Recently restored ’74 Super Beetle has nearly 2,700 on its new engine, finished in a stunning blue metallic paint.

The year 1974 was a fun one. The 1973 oil crisis came to end in March. Gerald Ford became the 38th President of the United States hours after Richard Nixon resigned. Muhammad Ali buried George Foreman in Zaire. Kate Moss and CeeLo Green were born, Duke Ellington and Charles Lindbergh passed into that good night.

And of course, this 1974 Volkswagen Baja Super Beetle left the assembly line to tool around England for four decades. Today, it prepares to head off for a new home as part of Classic Car Auctions’ May 2019 Classic Car Sale in Leamington Spa, England, on May 25.

The Volkswagen scored “an impressive 108 / 135” per CCA’s inspection report card, thanks to the extensive documentation attached with the classic. It also looks ready for a few sand dunes, like those of Camber Sands and Braunton Burrows.

Helping the Volkswagen up those dunes is a 1,641cc flat-four running dual carbs and a performance exhaust for excellent sound. The engine is a rebuilt unit, with nearly 2,700 miles put on it since returning home.

The baja bug’s interior is also top-notch, with plenty of blue suede and black leather on the seats to go with the black suede dash and House of Kolor Blue Kandy paint.

The whole build, carried out by Volkswagen and Porsche specialists DC Customs, was over $47,000 when completed. We think the price was well worth it for this same-family owned Baja Super Beetle.
