Does the GTC4 Lusso Foreshadow a Ferrari SUV?
Ferrari’s new shooting brake is its retort to the SUV and sedan craze.
Ferrari builds race cars, supercars, sports cars, and GT cars. That’s it. And with luck, that will always be it. Meanwhile Porsche has had a Cayenne on dealer floors for over a decade, and expanded their lineup to include a second SUV and a sedan since then. Jaguar has the F-pace, Maserati the Levante, and even Lamborghini’s SUV, the Urus, has been spotted testing at the Nurburgring. Of course, the above video’s host, Jason Cammisa, doesn’t miss an opportunity to blast Tesla for building a semi truck.
All of the traditionally sports-car centric automakers have branched out into the lucrative high-sales SUV and sedan markets, much to the chagrin of their long-time customers. Ferrari doesn’t seem to have any interest in doing so, and the four-place, four-wheel-drive GTC4 Lusso shooting brake is about as close as they’ll ever get, hopefully. Essentially an evolution of the now-gone Ferrari FF model, the GTC4 Lusso has room for four full-sized adults to get around in what passes for comfort in Maranello, we suppose. The new front and rear end are much more appropriate for the shape of this car than the FF ever was, and with a 680-horsepower, sonorous V12 under the hood, it has the go to match the show.

Even though the FF has been around for six years, we’re still not sure how we feel about an all-wheel drive Ferrari model. The twin-transmission setup in this car sure is trick, but is it really the ethos of Ferrari? Porsche introduced their first all-wheel drive street car in the 959 supercar back in 1986. Does that mean Ferrari will start producing SUVs in a couple decades? They say no right now, but how long can they avoid it?
