Ford GT Race Car to be Unveiled Next Month
The Ford Motor Company has been extremely busy, evaluating its 2017 Ford GT on public roads and, according to Motorsport.com, taking a racing version of the GT out onto the track for initial testing. Scott Maxwell was the lucky driver to take the race-spec GT out for its maiden laps at Calabogie Motorsports Park in Ontario earlier this month.
It’s reported that this same car will be unveiled at the 2015 24 Hours of Le Mans during the weekend of June 13, alongside an official announcement for Ford’s 2016 racing program.
The Ford GT racer will be powered by a Roush Yates Ecoboost 3.5-liter turbo V6 and mated to a Ricardo-designed and built gearbox.
Julian Sole, former Lola LMP designer, is leading the team that’s handling the mechanical design of the new GT under the Multimatic Motorsports umbrella. None of this would have been possible without the initiative from Multimatic’s technical director, Larry Holt, who has spent many years trying to get the go-ahead from Ford for both the road and race versions of the GT.
There’s a lot to look forward to at this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans race. We can’t wait for a new generation of rivalries to begin, particularly between Ferrari and Ford.
