Bentley Bentayga: Should You Just Buy A Range Rover Instead?
Can Hooniverse make a case for Bentley’s quarter-million dollar ‘luxo-beast’ SUV? It’s not an easy plea.
This video’s host and figurehead of Hooniverse.com, Jeff Glucker, calls the Bentayga a “luxo-beast”, and we can’t think of a more apt name. As automotive writers, we’re paid to tell our readers the truth of the situation even when that situation is our perception of value with regard to a car that retails for one-percenter money.
We know the difference, because we need to know the difference. The readers and viewers, especially those with the ability to spend half a million dollars on an SUV, trust us to tell the truth — or at least the fullness of our opinion — and report back what we’ve found out. It’s a strange position to be in, but we take it seriously.

In this case, Jeff is telling the truth, or at least the truth of his opinion when he says that he can’t find a reason to buy the Bentayga over a Range Rover for much less money. There are good things about it, but is the feel of a knob-surround worth tens of thousands of dollars? To some people, the difference between a Range and a Flying B will be worth the extra cash. For sure, Bentley will sell each and every Bentayga it can crank off its assembly line.
When it comes to Bentley, there are many things it builds that don’t make much sense (ahem, Continental GT3-R, we’re looking at you), but people buy them anyway because the brand cache and quality are major selling points. In that vein, as long as people have enough money to forgo considering value considerations, Bentley will win.
