Alfa Romeo Unveils GTA and GTAm Versions of Giulia Sedan
New models are faster, lighter and more powerful versions of already impressive Quadrifoglio sedan.
Alfa Romeo’s return to the U.S. market has been a roller coaster ride. Since the storied Italian company’s return to North America rumors have run rampant about the introduction of new models. Unfortunately, most of the rumors turned out to be just that, rumors and nothing else. That might change with the just-announced GTA and GTAm variants of the already impressive Giulia Quadrifoglio. The Quadrifoglio you may recall is considered one of the very best sport sedans available. Under its lightweight carbon-fiber hood is a Ferrari-derived V6 that pumps out 505 horsepower.
The new models were originally slated to be revealed at the Geneva auto show. That event was canceled due to concerns over coronavirus. Instead, Alfa Romeo announced the GTA and GTAm online. The GTA moniker is inspired by the 1965 Giulia GTA that was a sensation on racetracks around the work. The original GTA was further modified a few years later into the GTAm version that used wider bodywork and had even more power. Alfa Romeo is banking on a little of that historic race pedigree rubbing off on these new performance models. Car and Driver is reporting that the new Alfas will have 540 horsepower paired with a host of upgraded exterior components developed by Sauber Engineering. The wheels are 20-inch center-lock beauties. The model is also 220 pounds lighter than the Giulia Quadrifoglio. The GTAm is a track-oriented weapon that ditches the back seat while the front seats are carbon-fiber buckets. The GTAm also has more aggressive aerodynamic components along with a handful of other changes.
As expected the new versions of the Quadrofoglio are being met with extreme excitement by Alfa Romeo enthusiasts. The video that Alfa Romeo posted to their YouTube channel is racking up the comments only hours after it went online.  “Ok this is good,” commented Grommash Hellscream. “I am very optimistic about Alfa Romeo’s future. The Tonale concept is amazing, please make a hot hatch with the same design language.”
Of course, there are those who think that Alfa Romeo isn’t trying that hard with the GTA and GTAm. These are after all just modified versions of the normal production Quadrifoglio rather than all-new models. “Wow, the same model with more power, so original,” says Raziel. “This brand is dying.” And of course, there are critiques of the styling. “It’s a disappointment,” says Albert Bialozy. “The announcement of something great ends with a car that looks like it has left the tuning workshop.”
Overall though the new models from Alfa Romeo have been met with a lot of excitement. “No surprise… Alfa has been doing this since day one,” says Marvin McGrath. “We used to call it the poor man’s Ferrari back in the day. No other company has delivered what they have done. You can get an Alfa from 50 years ago and it still out handles most of the new cars on the market today. This car here is a masterpiece. Thank you, Alfa for bringing back what people thought you lost.” Personally I agree with that sentiment. Let’s just hope that Alfa Romeo elects to bring these beautiful beasts to America.
