What are the papers when buying used watch?

When someone sells watch with "box and papers," are the papers the warranty card, original receipt, new receipt, or something else?

Thanks

Manuals, warranty information, receipts, etc...yes, you're right.

You can buy the watch from a reputable seller, it could be genuine and you could get a great deal...but if you turn around later and try to sell this watch you might run into trouble selling it or wont get market value without the proper paper work.
What type of watch are you looking at?

Thanks, I think I am going to pass on the watch. I have always bought new but wanted to save a few bucks. I was looking for a Cartier Pasha, which does not retain the same resale value as Rolex or Pam. It's for my wife and she doesn't mind second hand as she is just adding to her collection.

As to the shop, I realize "reputable" is a broad stroke and open to interpretation. I saw the watch in our downtown jewlry district sold by a shop thats been around for 20 or so years. However, I have not done business with them before. Retail was $5150 or so, offered at $2200 with box no papers. Not a bad deal, if it was Gil, I would not hesitate and pick it up.

if you don't care about the papers, can't cartier verify the authenticity?

I wouldnt get a Cartier its too fashion watch, it will look old or out of season when compared to their newer and more complicated time peices. I would rather get something that will last, classy and timeless like a Rolex Submariner.

This was a watch for my wife and one that she liked because it was more informal than say her Rolex datejust.. I myself agree with you 100% and wear Submariner as a daily.

The watch was almost an impulse buy for her as we thought the price was really good.

Also, per MR Kram above, can I just take a watch into Cartier and ask them to verify authenticity?
