2010 Bell & Ross BR 01-92 RADAR
"At Baselworld 2010, Bell & Ross will have on display a new addition to its Instrument BR timepiece collection that takes aviation-inspired design to a new level of entertainment and visual surprise. The watch features a novel display of hours, minutes, and small seconds that makes use of a mechanism with concentrically oriented discs. These discs create an instantly readable layout that immediately calls to mind a plane radar and its hypnotic beam of light. Strategically colored line segments on each of the discs ensures that there is no confusion as to which time interval is which. They also contribute to the realism and striking looks of the display, which make a particularly eye-catching impression against the pure black color scheme of both case and strap.
The Bell & Ross BR 01-92 RADAR watch features a rectangular 46mm square case that will be immediately familiar from many other timepieces in the Bell & Ross Instrument BR collection. It is crafted from 316L stainless steel, with a black carbon coating over the bead-blasted underlying metal. Four screws surround the raised bezel, and provide an attractive frame for the large dial surface. At first glance, the viewer has to acquaint himself with the "radar" time display, but after a brief familiarization--all becomes second nature. The crosshair-type marking splits hours, minutes, and seconds into three staggered sectors, progressing from the dial edge, to the center. Sweeping in the outermost orbit, the hour disc is marked with a bold yellow segment. The middle disc shows minutes, and features a bright red index while the small inner seconds disc moves in its rapid rotation carrying a segment in fluorescent green.
Some specific engineering solutions and material selections were required to create rotating disc indicators for the BR 01-92 RADAR that would function flawlessly. A particularly tricky problem was in surmounting the much greater weight of discs compared to conventional hands (some 30 times greater, according to a Bell & Ross press release). To create discs which will rotate smoothly and not sap the power reserve or be a detriment to accuracy, Bell & Ross uses an undisclosed material with properties of extreme light weight and excellent excellent natural lubricity. The brand's skilled watchmakers mate this sophisticated system with the venerable ETA 2892 self-winding movement, a caliber that has proven its merit numerous times as an extremely reliable power source for complex and specialized horological executions.
The Bell & Ross BR 01-92 RADAR timepiece will be produced in a limited edition of 500 watches. Each of the watches is completed by the durable Bell & Ross rubber strap and a stainless steel tang buckle in black carbon finish. Like other Bell & Ross models, the crystal is manufactured from scratch-resistant synthetic sapphire. A screw-down winding crown with a grippy knurled surface helps ensure the sporty durability of the model, as well as a water resistance rating of 100 meters. Official pricing information has not yet been released, but initial indications suggest the RADAR will be offered at a number somewhere near the $5,000(USD) mark."
