I never understood the point of putting North, East, South, West markers on a watch. How can it be used as a compass?

I got one like this from my mom 20 years ago. Still have it

My mom never got me the compass required though

Seems a bit redundant to put the NESW on it, but every watch can be used as a compass pretty easily.
