Thoughts on Maurice Lacroix...

Saw a Maurice Lacroix that I really liked today. What is the general consensus on the brand in general? Worth spending money on? Good investment?

eh. derivative designs, cheap movements, nothing really interesting. their new chrono might be decent, i haven't gotten a chance to check it out yet.

if you love one, get it, but in general i think you could do better for your money.

Steve,

The one I looked at today has a complete in-house movement. Double retrograde Maurice Lacroix - Masterpiece

that's a Unitas movement and the design is a Breguet rip-off. Don't believe everything that you read.

That being said, if you love it, get it. It's just a watch. It's just good to know what it is you're buying.

do not get me wrong, i'm not a big in-house movement snob. the fact is that NO ONE makes a truly in-house movement. There is nothing wrong with taking something that works well and is easily serviced and using it. BUT, there are good movements and bad. The GP bases are very nice, as are the JLC, Lemania, and a few others. The ETA stuff is the super cheap way to go.

what price point are you looking at? maybe i can help recommend some stuff?

from those watches, i take it you're looking for a really classically designed, dressier watch?

I'm looking for something presentable and non-sporty. Yes, something classic/dressy. I'm not a big fan of trendy watches either, i.e. Panerai/Rolex/Breitling... It will be a grad gift from me, to me, for finishing up law school. Budget around 5-6k.
