We talked about this hotel only a few weeks ago....

Monaco's tourism gem wins excellence award, again

Monaco’s trademark establishment, the Fairmont Monte Carlo hotel, has just won ‘Best Overseas Hotel’ in the London tourist awards. The establishment is crediting the honour to its staff's hard work, as it brings home to Monaco its fourth award in a row.

It was during the London M&IT Awards 2013 that the Fairmont Monte Carlo was declared a winner, for the fourth consecutive year, taking home the Golden Award for 'Best Overseas Hotel' in Europe.

The Fairmont was given first prize, followed by Hotel Arts in Barcelona in second and the Dolder Grand Hotel in Zurich coming in third.

“This wonderful victory is symbolic of efforts made every day by 500 workers in the Fairmont Monte Carlo all year long and a mark of recognition of their team work,” the hotel said following Tuesday's award ceremony.

Monaco’s tourism sector received yet another pat on the back with the Monaco Government Tourism Authority & Convention Bureau winning the ‘Best Overseas Convention Bureau’ award.

The Meetings & Incentive Tourism magazine awards includes 19 categories focused on European tourism. The official results are decided from the votes of more than 24,000 tourism professionals.

(Luxury Yachts | Superyachts and Mega Yachts | Burgess)

WHERE TO EAT

* Le Festival ( +33 4 93 38 04 81)
Le Festival doesn’t have the initial ‘wow’ factor that many of its competitors do upon first glance, but its food more than makes up for that. This is why the restaurant has become the go-to breakfast spot for A-list festival goers…the ones who eat, that is. ( Le Festival - Restaurant Bar Grill Banquet - Cannes, La Croisette )

* La Mere Besson ( +33 4 93 39 59 24) - Mere Besson is one of the most beloved Cannes restaurants that have thrived since the 1930’s. The restaurant is known for keeping Provencal traditions. Many stars venture out to this Cannes gem for French favorites like the estouffade provencale, braised beef with red wine topped with a rich sauce made from herbs, garlic, mushrooms and onions.

* Felix ( + 33 4 93 94 00 61 ) - This extravagant French restaurant is one of Madonna’s favorites. Enough said. ( FÉLIX Cannes )

WHERE TO PARTY

* The Gotha Club summer only. ( Reservations always best call +33 4 93 45 11 11)

Palm Beach Casino. Place Franklin Roosevelt, at the end of the Croisette. The alliance of a mythical place and an ephemeral club, the most trendy and amazing nights in Cannes.

The former managers of the Palais Club are now running Gotha, to be found at Palm Beach casino. It welcomes 2,500 clubbers every night. Entry 25 euros and 50 euros when the big names appear. A beer costs 12 euros as do soft drinks. See G?O?T?H?A Homepage for programme. Open 28 June - 1 September every night.

* Baoli - also restaurant ( + 33 4 93 43 03 43 )
Where will you find the hottest mélange of the hottest actors, musicians and beautiful people from Akon to Adrien Brody. The Cannes hot spot has been named one of the top clubs by ELLE magazine and is attended by many celebrities during the film festival. Baoli is very much a ‘see and be seen’ spot in Cannes. Though its seafood is amazing, its celestial views are the primary draw. Among those who’ve broken bread in the chic eatery are Bono, Jay-Z and Eva Mendes.

This luxury restaurant and club has recently had almost one million euros invested in a make-over. Guests still enter through huge wooden Balinese doors and the whole feeling of "Budha cool" is echoed throughout the venue. Celebrities frequent the place which boasts an ultra swish restaurant. Expect a menu that includes noodles and spicy beef dishes as well as potent cocktails - expect to pay at least 75 euros pp for dinner. Doors open 8pm, music hots up from midnight. Dress - chic and glamorous. Be warned - it is exclusive and can be difficult to get in. ( www.lebaoli.com )

* La Terrasse ( + 33 4 92 99 70 00 )

You must find a way to get your name on the list at La Terrasse, the 5-star hotel Palais Stephanie’s invitation-only rooftop lounge. International supper club Nikki Beach typically throws their annual parties at this hotspot. It is additionally important because it rests on the original site of the Palais des Congrès, home to the very first festival. ( Restaurant gastronomique et specialites regionales, Restaurant La Terrasse a La Roquette-sur-Siagne dans les Alpes-Maritimes (06) )

* Nikki Beach ( Nikki Beach at the 66th Annual Cannes Film Festival May 15-26 2013 )
During the entirety of the film festival, day & night, Nikki Beach will take up residence in two Cannes locations on La Croisette inside the Palais Stephanie, offering premiere parties and international renowned DJs. Nikki Beach is the go to location for Cannes parties and has hosted everything from a Gala Dinner for Les Etolie and a premier for Roman Polanski to the official closing party for the Cannes Film Festival. If you would like to party with the who’s who of the film industry Nikki Beach is the place to go.

Night Clubs can stay open until 7am but the bars must close at 5.30am. The aim is for you all to be able to take a bus or a train home instead of driving! (for those unfortunate enough NOT to have bodyguard and limo waiting....)

Leave the car at home - for summer excellent night bus service runs till 2.30am and the normal day buses start at 5.30am. Not as good, but a winter service is also available.

WHERE TO SHOP

Cannes has some great shopping locations. This is one place at which you really can empty your purse or wallet or max out your credit card in a big way if you so desire, such is the selection of retail outlets on offer. Head for the waterfront for nice boutiques, clothing shops and chic little cafes where you can have a coffee and a break from the retail therapy.

La Croisette and Rue d'Antibes are the city's most exclusive shopping streets and where, if you earn a salary that comes in five or six figures, you can probably afford to shop. These streets are home to many of the world's top designer labels including Yves Saint Laurent, Ralph Lauren, Lacroix, Chanel and Valentino.

For something a bit more down to earth, head for Rue Meynadier, where prices are considerably cheaper and the atmosphere in more akin to a local market than a rich man's emporium. For an authentic Provencal market experience, head for Marche Forville, where you can find fresh fruit and vegetables, fish, flowers and organic produce.

CANNES FILM FESTIVAL FEATURES

( Festival de Cannes - From 15th to 26th May 2013 )

WHERE TO SPOT A CELEBRITY

* Head over to the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès. This is where the festival’s red carpet is rolled out, so rest assured you’ll have a bird’s eye view of all the action. Pay special attention to those in taffeta gowns and tuxedos.

* Casually stroll around the Port de Cannes marina, where you’ll be certain to see a few faces you’ll recognize. Last year Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale were among those holding court aboard Roman Abramovich’s yacht, Luna. Leonardo DiCaprio paid Steven Spielberg a visit on the Seven Seas and Sarah Jessica Parker partied on Russian investor Len Blavatnik’s Odessa.

* La Croisette is the heart of Cannes, but if you really want to live like the jet set, you’ll browse through expensive boutiques like YSL, Chanel, Dior and Gucci. Who knows? You may just need a last minute designer dress in case you happen to have a Notting Hill moment!

HOW A NON-A LISTER CAN TRY TO SCORE TICKETS FOR A FILM

* Tickets to the film festival are harder to procure than gold dust as they are primarily for stars, industry bigwigs and press. There’s no use trying to sneak in or pretending to be one of the above, either: you’ll be rumbled immediately.That said, there are ways of seeing some films if you so choose.

* If you’re a true film enthusiast, you can try to get accreditation through the Cannes Cinephiles program.

Tickets to the Director’s Fortnight and International Critics Week screenings are open to the public. Hurry, though – tickets go fast and can only be purchased at the Malmaison esplanade.

* Lastly, you may be able to catch a screening at the Cinema de la Plage. These showings are FREE every evening and include movies from the official selection, those in the competition and classic Cannes films. Get your invitation at the Cannes tourism office.

CAN'T MISS CANNES FILM FESTIVAL EVENTS
