Highly recommend St John over St Thomas. Much quieter, smaller, great beaches. Caneel Bay is highly rated, I've stayed there several times -- nice but I much prefer to rent a private villa on St John. There is also a nice Westin on St John though it's not on the nicest beach. Caneel Bay has 7 beaches on their property.

St John is just a short ferry ride over from St Thomas. PM me if you wany any more info. Here are some pics of our trip to St John last year:

We took a fun day trip over to Virgin Gorda to visit the Baths -- a lot of fun (pics in the above gallery). I'd highly recommend it -- if interested I'll find the name of the boat company we went with -- they were a lot of fun.

+1 on Caneel Bay, my wife and I were married there and have returned several times since. Virgin Gorda is must not only for the baths but also the Bitter End Yacht Club. Don't stay on St. Thomas, it is much more commercial/tourist/even seedy in some places. Foxy's on Jost van Dyke is also a lot of fun and retains its quaint appeal despite the number of celebrities that have been there...fun! BTW, "first (full) moon in June" is big billfish heaven down island, and a great time if you're into fishing.

Caneel Bay is what gets constantly recomended so that is what we will most likely go with. Thanks for the rec's for Foxy's and the Baths.

This is the day trip to the Baths we did -- it was a lot of fun. Included other snorkeling stops, lunch stop, and a stop at the Soggy Dollar bar. Fun trip (we had 3 kids with us and it was definitely kid friendly (though they were the only kids).

don't forget the great shopping on St. Thomas though. there are limits (I don't remember) but you can save pretty good amount of $$$$, esp on watches and jewelry, plus no tax!

I've never understood the island shopping thing. Always found better deals (and no tax) for watches and jewelry shopping online than on islands.

Then again we're not ones who shop on vacations...

I appreciate it, but I find I can get better deals on watches through Gil and on Jewelry through Jason. But I appreciate the recomendations.

As a younger dude I was fortunate enough to travel to the caribbean extensively. For kids I dont recommend Caneel Bay, back in the day they had a no telephone no television policy and not sure if its that kid friendly. I do recommend the Ritz Carlton in St Thomas as it has a lot of amenities and is on a beautiful piece of property that over looks St John in the distance. Back in the day a family member managed the property when it was called the Grand Palazzo.

Depends on the kid. True there is no TV and phone in the room at Caneel, but the beaches etc are kid friendly. I went there as a kid and have gone there WITH my kids as an adult. Bring your laptop or their gameboys (I believe there is wifi now down by the beach) and they'd be fine.

It's more of a "natural" feeling there than a "resort" feeling -- so just depends on what you are looking for.
