First trip to LA, any recommendations?

Thanks for all of the input. Is it Mastro's or Maestro's?
LABrit - What sort of property development? I've been in commercial real estate (primarily brokerage) for the past several years. If I had to guess, I'd say we'd like to keep our rent in the $1500 range. I know it will be small, but we're okay with that. It also depends on whether my wife finds work. Plus, we have a dog (85lb chocolate lab) that we'd like to bring with us. If we can't, we do have a couple of good "foster homes."
The W seemed like the best bet for our few day stay. I wanted to see where everything was in relation to the campus. Plus, we're getting a decent room for about $250/night.

Thanks, TUUNER.
SLC4S - A former colleague has a studio in Westwood that is $1,500. I was just using this as a starting point, as I'm not sure what to expect. We'll do some research while we're out there.
We'll be in Durham this weekend (Duke) and they recommend a budget of $800/month, lol.

If your over at paradise Cove your in my Neck of the woods!!
Some great drives over there - Malibu Canyons, Santa Monica mountains, etc. If you over there this Saturday I will be around the area either with the Bike, or in the Car hitting the twisties. Shoot me a PM if you want a little tour or something!
Congrats on UCLA!!
* Just realized I missed ya - About a week late!! Anyway When your back in town shoot me a PM!

ucla sucks, but congrats anyway.
if you have transportation, i'm sure there are reasonable places in culver city/palms to live. if you're not from a big melting pot type city, i'd seek out some ethnic food.

Thanks all. We had a great trip.
LA is EXPENSIVE!!! Not that I wasn't prepared, but experienceing it firsthand is different.
We are by no means food critics. All we care about is whether we think it tastes good. Here is my run-down and thoughts.
Th - Lunch - Chipotle, Westwood - It was Chipotle
Th - Dinner - Tengu, Westwood - Sushi, We liked it. Bets we've ever had (not sure if that means anything) Very fresh (to us). $60 for what would have been $25 in Atlanta.
Fri - Lunch - Il Fornaio, Beverly Hills - I would eat here daily.
Fri - Dinner - The bar at The W, Westwood - Tuna Tartar app and Morroccan Chicken dinner. Not bad but overpriced.
Sat - Breakfast - Paradise Cove, Malibu. Enjoyed our breakfast, but view and drive was amazing.
Sat - Lunch - The Ivy at the shore - Santa Monica - Okay. Liked the location and drinks.
Sat - Dinner - Sandwich shop in Westwood Village - Cheap and welcomed, followed by Diddy Riese cookies and ice cream
New 700SF apartments for $3K/month was a shocker. Older units for $1500-1800. I think we'd want to live in Santa Monica.
Two days after we got back UCLA offered me a partial scholarship, which now makes this an extremely tough decision.
Thanks again.
