Have stayed at a bunch of different hotels in Paris, but always prefer Westin . . .

My French friends recommend Novotel. The price is very reasonable and the location is extremely convenient. Very modern hotels too! Starwood are really cool hotels as well. "W" is my one of my favorites. If you want high end try Sofitel.
Probably because its a French brand.

I don't know what, exactly, you mean by "not too expensive". However I would recommend taking a look at Pershing Hall (Hotel Paris ~ Pershing hall) or Hotel Costes. Both of these are super cool, and have a great bar/restaurant scene. So even if you don't stay there you should check it out. Another not so cool place would be the Marriot on the Champs Elysees.

What a timely revival of this thread. I am planning on surprising my wife with a trip to Paris in the spring. Anyone else going that time frame?

I stayed in the H&K in the fashion district and it was awesome .. subway can take you anywhere you want to go. We lucked out and MAC was have an annual event there and there were hot models everywhere .. it was horrible
