My New Year's Day Meal

New Year's Day is a very festive day for the Japanese. On most years, I prepare a traditional feast at my house.

Veggie Plate - The obligatory finger food. If you look in the upper, left-hand corner you can see the packages of mochi (rice cakes) which are often consumed this time of year.

Chirashi - "Mixed up" sushi rice. I used fish cake, bbq pork, scrambled eggs, ginger and seaweed.

Sashimi #1 - Tuna, salmon, yellowtail, fatty tuna, giant clam.

Sashimi #2 - Abalone, octopus, yellowtail, salmon, tuna, fatty tuna, seared albacore.

Sashimi #3 - Halibut, seared albacore, octopus, giant clam, abalone, sea urchin.

Oshinko and Kuro Mame - Japanese pickles and "good luck" black beans.

continued...

Kimpira Hasu and Gobo - Lotus root and burdock root saute'd in soy, sugar, sesame oil with chili peppers.

Nasu Miso - Eggplant saute'd with miso.

Kurobuta Sausage - Black pig sausages. These are kind of like link sausages, but with a "snappy" skin and much more flavor.

Nishime - Japanese stew with chicken, fish cake, carrots, turnip, japanese potato, seaweed, lotus root, burdock root, yam cake, tofu and shitake mushrooms.

Ozoni - A very traditional New Year's soup. It's basically a chicken stock with chicken, fish cake, carrots, shitake mushrooms, bamboo shoots, lotus root, burdock root. The rice cakes are place in this soup along with some mizuna (greens).

Desserts - Pound cake with orange glaze, rice crispie treats, brownies, 7 layer jellow, white chocolate covered strawberries.
