Taylor Plug & Play Loaded Pickguards – Introduction
Swapping out pickups has long been a part of electric guitar culture. From humbuckers to single coils, different pickups (and switching positions) give players a range of distinctive tonal flavors, and part of the electric experience is modifying, or “modding,” a guitar to suit one’s personal tastes. The problem is that swapping pickups typically involves soldering, which not everyone feels comfortable doing.

We’ve made it easy. Instead of soldering, Taylor electric pickups use a simple pin-and-socket connector that makes for a true “plug & play” experience. For our SolidBody Classic, we offer seven different loaded pickguard options that allow you to swap out the pickup/pickguard unit in minutes with a Phillips head screwdriver.

We factory-install our Style 1 HD mini humbuckers on all Classic models. From there, each of our seven loaded pickguards features a different pickup configuration. Choose from mini-or full-size HD and HG humbuckers, our noiseless single coils, and hybrid humbucker/single coil options. There are also four different pickguard styles to choose from: black or white pearloid, tortoise shell, and black, allowing you to also change the look of a Classic.

Easy pickup swapping might appeal to someone who plays a variety of styles — maybe a player who gigs in a couple of different bands, like a country/blues band and a hard rock band. He might use the Classic SC (single coil) for one band gig and then swap out for a loaded pickguard with two HG humbuckers to get a crunchier sound for the other. With the loaded pickguards, swapping pickups back and forth is a breeze. It lets you mod your guitar in minutes to give it multiple personalities without having to buy a whole new guitar.

These are the high definition Style 2 pickups we install on the SolidBody Standard. As full-size humbuckers, they’ll give you a heavier, dirtier tone than the mini for more of a rock edge, plus great sustain, balance and tonal clarity. Players will love how well they work with their effects and amps, providing great definition and drive without any mud or ice-pick top end.

If you’re a single coil person, there’s a lot that’s familiar about our single coil pickups, but the biggest surprise is how great the bridge pickup sounds overdriven. Played from mild to massive distortion, it’ll sound really good, without the buzz and other noise. It’s a fuller, fatter bridge single coil, yet it doesn’t give up the sparkle and clarity when you’re playing clean.

Like their HD mini humbucker siblings, the HG versions benefit from their compact ¾-size by narrowing their sonic footprint, allowing them to cut through a mix well, whether in a studio setting or with a live band on stage. The distinction is that the HDs yield a bit more of a vintage, articulate sound, whereas the HGs deliver slightly more output, resulting in a bolder, more assertive voice, yet still without sacrificing their ability to sit nicely in a mix.

If you’re a heavy rock person, the full-size high gain humbuckers are probably a great match. They give you the ability to get a high gain tone without it going muddy. Because the HGs are engineered to hit the front of the amp harder, the resulting tone is darker, fuller and fatter, so they’ll suit players who like to detune and who crave a heavier tone. They’ll love the hefty output.

Single HG Humbucker
Single Pickup 1: Push/Pull Pot for Single Coil Mode

Pulling up on the volume pot will split the coil, but there’s also a beautiful simplicity about a single humbucker and a volume control. This is good for a couple of types of players: If you’re someone who rides the volume knob, our humbucker design will reward you with all kinds of colors and flavors at different levels just by turning down the volume controls a little and hitting the amp different ways. But this is also perfect for someone who lives on the bridge pickup and plays full-tilt all the time. At Taylor, we think a great guitar gets out of your way as a player, and this would be a great application of that. It’s the spirit of Johnny Ramone, someone whose playing says: This is my tone; I apply it to everything.

This is one of our hybrid configurations, also known as the single single hum. It was born in the ’80s, out of the L.A. studio scene, where guys started putting humbuckers in the back of their Strats. It actually went on to become its own sound. It’s super-versatile. If you play a wide variety of things, whether it’s at church and then in a cover or a classic rock tribute band, you can roam all over the map with these pickups and have great tone wherever you go. It’s the opposite of the single humbucker approach.

Another hybrid, the mini humbucker in the neck and the single coil in the bridge is a bit of a nod to Keith Richards and several great blues players of the past, like Albert Collins. The neck humbucker gives you a sweet, bluesy tone, while the bridge single coil responds with a rip-your-head-off tone. And because of our hum-canceling single coil design, it rocks hard. If you’re someone who wants your own rock voice, it’s a cool combination, because it delivers tones that are strangely familiar, yet all your own, allowing you to take your sound to places that don’t sound so traditional.
