I was lucky enough to have seen him live in 1983 at the California state fairgrounds in Sacramento. He was the middle act in a 3 band lineup with Y&T, SRV and Sammy Hagar. Amazing show. It was an interesting contrast to have him as the middle act between two heavy metal bands. I remember SRV had 2 other people in his band and he had a large collection of beat up guitars on stage with him which he seemed to use almost all of them at some point in his set.
I really wish I could appreciate who he was at the time I saw him play live and in person. I did enjoy his music at the time, but like most of the crowd that night, I was there for some HEAVY METAL!!!!!

Hands down the best guitar player who ever lived. So many have tried to replicate his sound (me too) but it just doesn't sound the same, there's a soul to fingertips connection that's unmistakable with SRV.

Little known fact: SRV actually took Eric Clapton's seat on that helicopter ride.
I loved SRV and have listened to every one of his CDs probably thousands of times. I too am bummed that he's no longer with us and remember being pretty shaken up about it that fateful day.

It was a helicopter and it was at Alpine Valley Wisconsin during my sophomore year in college. I remember it vividly because I went to the concert and then headed back to the city (Chicago) because we heard a rumor that SRV was going to play at Kingston Mines, which was only a few blocks from where I was living. We went to "The Mines" but SRV never showed and so we went home. The next day I was in my car and driving a few blocks from The Mines when I heard the news.

Was riding shotgun in my friends car. Heard it on the radio. We both loved his music. Sad day.

Not sure I can say he was the 'best guitar player who ever lived' but certainly one of the best. And certainly a distinctive style. Listening to LZ, Jimmy Page was just phenomenal. Would have to give the nod to him.
