Best way to record guitar--multiple layers?
Hey music gurus,
What's the best way to record electric onto my pc? What mic and what program? And is the mic the best way to go or should I get a direct input? I'm guessing mic to preserve the guitar sound, but I'm not sure. I'd prefer to get some sort of free software and maybe a mic under $50 so if you can help me, that'd be great. (Also, as the title says, I'll be recording multiple layers per track, if that makes a difference).
Thanks!

If you're going to be recording consider this a very good investment.
Mbox 2 Mini
It's the basic home model and that's all you need to record properly.
Alternatively, if that's out of the question I would go with a Sonar/Cakewalk option.

$50 FOR an m-audio jamlab
its cheap but it gets the job done for inexpensive recording. it comes with lots of presets and user made effects. Goes right from the 1/4" jack into the littl ebox jive then into usb 2.0

If you're recording from the speaker, pretty much every great guitar recording in history was made with a Shure SM57 mic. I only ever used it into a 4-track back in the day. TO go into a PC, you may need a pre-amp to juice the signal to line level.
Now, go and spend a decade mapping every permutation of mic placement and room acoustics for the perfect tone.
