Looking for a good 22 rifle for my son

My son is 11 and learned how to shoot at a week long Boy Scout trip. We have a range near our home and I think it would be fun to buy him a 22 so we can go shoot. I don't want to spend a bunch of money but I want something that wont jam and will be of quality. I want him to learn how to care for and safely shoot the gun.

Suggestions? What kind of price point should I expect to pay?

^This.
The Ruger is an outstanding rifle. I have had one forever it seems. Fairly inexpensive to buy, and a great rifle.

A Ruger 10/22 was my first rifle also. Around the age of 13 (14 years ago) my father upgraded me to another type of .22 although its very hard to remember what it was in fact. It did not have a clip but a 17shot choke that was pushed in by a rod from the tip of the barrel.

Anywho go cheap on the .22 and upgrade to the CZ .17 HMR when he/she is a bit older.

I had a Marlin .22 when I was a kid. Still have it. Great gun.

We went to the range today and rented a Ruger 10/22, he put a hundred rounds through it and did very well. It fits him well and he seems to have good control over it. He is going to be pissed when we buy one without the scope! The range only had them with scopes for rent.

Thanks for the suggestions! Great choice. I will be picking one up for him when we gets back from Scout camp as a reward for getting his shooting merit badge.

Last 20 rounds @ 50 yards...not bad for his second time with a gun in his hands!

Fundamentals are key - make him an expert with open sights, then a scope just makes it better. Start with a scope and fundamentals are absent.
