The thrower he's using has been modified to use a propane torch to ignite, which is the cause of the minor fires at the business end. In their original form, the M2 flamethrower used a battery powered ignitor in the forward hand grip to light off the roasty toasty. It wasn't the most reliable system in the world, but it didn't involve a constant ignition source, so after-fires on the wand were fairly rare.

They don't explode violently as portrayed by hollyweird, either. Puncture the gas tanks and you get a slow leak of gelled gas. Wouldn't want to hang around it, but you're not likely to go up like a roman candle. The third tank is full of compressed nitrogen that acts as a propellant, which is inert.
