Gun control, need help!!

I always come into the shooting range to get info and learn stuff, but now i really need all your knowledge and resources.

I have to write a paper for my political methods class and the question is on gun rights.

Im supposed to answer the following question " in order to obtain a handgun, States should require individuals to obtain a license and enforce a waiting period before and individual can take possession of the hand gun"

My job is to talk about both sides of the issue a brief history on gun rights, and then talk about what outcomes are being advocated in this policy area.

any help from you guys would be great

I'm busy right now, but here's an FBI report to get you started.

FBI Confirms It: Criminals Ignore Gun Laws
http://www.nraila.org/Issues/Article...=254&issue=007

The above policy would only affect sales through an FFL gun dealer. As the report shows, criminals don't get their guns from an FFL gun dealer, so this policy would have absolutely NO effect on their ability to obtain a handgun.
“The federal government has passed many laws to restrict and limit firearm purchases. The offenders in this research, how-ever, stated that none of these laws or statutes deterred them.”

“Of the 33 handguns used to assault the officers who participated in the current study, 32 (97 percent) were obtained illegally. Eighteen of these were purchased or traded from other [criminals]; six were obtained during burglaries; four were taken from the victim officers during the incidents of examination; two were stolen during larcenies; one was stolen during a homicide; and one was illegally purchased from a firearm dealer in a store (straw purchase by a female associate). “None of the rifles, shotguns or handguns connected with this study were obtained from gun shows or related activities.”

“No, we ain’t going to no store to buy [guns]. I mean, you know, you got everybody out there doing their thing as far as being a criminal. You got guys out there that sell drugs. Guys out there that do burglaries and all that stuff. So, there is some gun sellers out there … it’s almost easy as being able to find drugs.”

Start with the 2nd Amendement. Then you can also look at which states are "shall issue" versus "may issue".

While not being able to direct you to exact content for your project, you may want to check out AR15.com and search around their site for a bit. I will neither endorse or condemn some of their views... but the members there can be outspoken and they too expect you to provide sources when making an argument or point. Opencarry.org may also have some useful links as well. The NRA site may also have some info you can use.

Albeit a bit dated (1990 pub date), this book is pretty good at presenting both sides objectively.
