It's much easier to get stuff via corrupt Mexican army guys, leftovers from El Salvador/Honduras/Nicaragua, black market (since you KNOW Mexico is renowned for having strong immigration controls), etc. Once someone "important" is killed by these guys on US soil, then someone will take notice.

+1. While it's true that the cartels ARE getting weapons from the US, they are probably still getting the majority of them in their home country (because it's cheaper).

Or maybe because they can actually get assault weapons in Mexico.
