Assault rifle ban listed on Whitehouse agenda page

Saw this on another forum, it was posted Tuesday evening. Obama hadn't even been in office 8 hours yet before feeling the need to post these statements:

Urban Policy

Address Gun Violence in Cities: Obama and Biden would repeal the Tiahrt Amendment, which restricts the ability of local law enforcement to access important gun trace information, and give police officers across the nation the tools they need to solve gun crimes and fight the illegal arms trade. Obama and Biden also favor commonsense measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, while keeping guns away from children and from criminals. They support closing the gun show loophole and making guns in this country childproof. They also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent.
Now, I am normally not one to buy into all the doom and gloom the media typically reports. But the thing that concerns me most is that I feel our crime rate IS going to go up the next few years with a gun ban, it has been proven to happen in other countries after all.

Other tidbits to ponder:

I keep reading/hearing about more corporate bankruptcies coming down the pipeline. This is due to weak sales along with the higher interest rates they now have to burden just to pay their employees. That of course means even more unemployment.

I also heard on the news a story regarding future house foreclosures. This particular story focused on the high risk mortgages that targeted a very high percentage of African Americans due to bank incentives based on the Fair Housing Act. It went on to state that 1 in 5 of every African American families would lose their home in the next 4 years. If the numbers are that high for just one group, the foreclosure numbers across all people in America are obviously going to continue to climb regardless of race.

The last piece of course is related to state budget deficits. In order to reign in their deficits, many states are considering layoffs of state employees, including firefighters and police officers.

So, we have:

1. Rising unemployment
2. Thousands losing their homes
3. Decreased Police presence

And somebody thinks the way to decrease crime in cities is to throw a gun ban on top of it all. How could our crime rates NOT go up? Anybody else been thinking the same lately? Ugh.

How can he reconcile the second and fourth sentences? That is, how is restricting the Constitutional rights of citizens to bear arms respectful of the Second Amendment. Err, just not in agreement with the majority of Democrats on this one. Hopefully, the Republican members of Congress will be able to muster the strength to block this.

Who needs liberty and the Constitution when you have "hope" and "change?"

That's true. The gun business has been booming lately. Maybe we should try and shut it down through bans and taxes so we can increase unemployment even more?

Obama and Biden would repeal the Tiahrt Amendment, which restricts the ability of local law enforcement to access important gun trace information, and give police officers across the nation the tools they need to solve gun crimes and fight the illegal arms trade.
The Tiahrt Amendment already has a provision that gives law enforcement agencies the ability to do gun traces. They are talking out of their ass.

Trace information remains available for law enforcement use. The FY 2007 version of the Tiahrt amendment ensures that trace data is available to federal, state, and local agencies "in connection with and for use in a bona fide criminal investigation or prosecution" or for use in administrative actions by BATFE—which is, of course, the principal agency responsible for overseeing the conduct of federally licensed firearms dealers.

Repealing the Tiahrt agreement is strongly opposed by law enforcement.

Both BATFE and the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) oppose release of trace data. In fact, BATFE has fought for years in the federal courts to keep the databases confidential, because they contain information (such as names of gun buyers) that could jeopardize ongoing investigations—not to mention law enforcement officers’ lives. For example, a suspected gun trafficker could search databases for names of "straw purchasers" he had used to buy handguns, or for traces requested on guns he had sold. That information could lead him to names of officers, informants and other witnesses against his crimes.

Why would they want to counter the opinions of the people enforcing the laws and put them at risk?

As usual, more gun laws that make no sense, disarm honest Americans and help raise the crime rate.
