Rep for anyone who knows what this car is supposed to be
it was at the LA auto show last year, in the gaudy section. I looked at it for minutes on end, but I could't figure out what it is. Every time I see the pic, it drives me bonkers...

Ahhhh, yes. It's the Horrific 3000. I believe this particular one is the RS model. Their business idea is to make car so horrific and out of proportion you hit your gag reflex whenever it's in sight. AutoCar described it as the 2Girls1Cup equivalent to the automotive world.

It's called the Vision SZR. The car you saw was the 4th car built since 2005.
6.0L V12, 650ish HP, 0-60 in 3.5s, top speed of 200 mph, and none of that matters because it's absolutely hideous and almost certainly a shadily built death trap.
