BaT Exclusive: All Original 1987 Porsche 959
This 1987 Porsche 959 has only 22k original miles and is offered by its second owner. It was imported into the USA under the DOT’s Show and Display clause, and is currently registered in Colorado with a clear title. The car is exactly as it left the factory, with all books, tools, and KM speedometer. It is offered by a private party owner and it was on the cover of the January 2009 PCA Panorama magazine. This is one of few 959’s in the USA that remain in their 100% stock Euro configuration. We like the modifications for road use that have been developed by Canepa Designs and others, but as we’ve seen with the older models the long-term value for worldwide collectors is likely in a 100% stock low-mile example as shown here. Once we hit 2012 the 25-year-old clause will be in effect and the Show and Display restrictions won’t be as critical, so this car will be totally legal to register in its current form in any state (emissions rules permitting; sorry California). The seller states that the Show and Display rules have already lapsed for this car, but as always it is up to interested parties to verify with the DOT importation guidelines.



We love the photos taken at the seller’s location next to the John Deere tractor. Though they might be a deterrent for someone trying to sell a less impressive model, this 959 needs no sales pitch and showing it in a real-world environment actually adds to the appeal. The seller has obviously kept it in that nice garage and rolled it out to get some good photos. Seeing one in a non-dealer environment is very cool, as it seems like most of them end up in jewel cases with hefty mark-ups.



The outdoor photos wash out the color a bit but this is indeed the real Porsche Red that was on the perfect 959 we had on our wall as kids. The interior looks tremendous in dark gray with the signature striped seats. The seller tells us that there are zero flaws.



The engine is in perfect condition with all maintenance documented and any needs addressed. It is given regular exercise and runs well. The sale also includes a pair of factory performance chips that are not yet installed and pictured in the album below.



This is an impressive car and one that will have strong value way into the future. We’ve always wondered whether we would see an influx of this model once it becomes legal, but with this car a buyer can have it a couple years early with no duties to pay and in a condition like it just came off the showroom floor in Stuttgart.
