"With the burly Panamera off the track, it was time to roll out the big guns. Everyone expected Geiger's electric-green, twin-turbo Corvette Z06 to put its 790 hp to good use with a hugely fast run, and it didn't disappoint. First time out, the 'Vette hit 208.5 mph without even completing a full lap at speed. Unfortunately, it never came around again. Somewhere along Nardo's 7.8-mile-long circle, the Vette's clutch line broke and the fluid caught fire. Fortunately, the small fire was put out quickly, and with a quick fix the 'Vette was back out the next morning to make a 213.1 mph run. Would it be enough to take home this year's record?


Waiting for the slightly charred Corvette to move off the track was the Hohenester HS650G, a race-ready Audi A4 powered by a seemingly harmless 3.0L twin-turbo V-6 running on natural gas. Its streamlined solid wheel covers underscored that this was no regular Audi. With 650 hp coursing out of its little six, the Audi roared past the Corvette to 218.5 mph, upstaging a number of its more powerful competitors."
