Awesome. The Merc CLR has been a dream car ever since I first laid eyes on one. I lived in West LA a few years ago and one of the exotic car dealers on LaCienega had a road going version of the CLR on its showroom floor for a while. I stopped in to gaze at it more than a few times. Simply an awesome machine.
The racing version of that car was called the CLK-LM and won the FIA GT series in both 1997 and 1998 (winning every race which eventually led to everyone else pulling out).

Unless Mercedes have been hiding something from the world for a long time, I think you'll find the car you saw was the CLK-GTR, a road going version of the car they used at Le Mans for the two seasons previous to the season the CLR was there.
