Unless Mercedes have been hiding something from the world for a long time, I think you'll find the car you saw was the CLK-GTR, a road going version of the car they used at Le Mans for the two seasons previous to the season the CLR was there.

The racing version of that car was called the CLK-LM and won the FIA GT series in both 1997 and 1998 (winning every race which eventually led to everyone else pulling out).

You are correct. I got my CL's mixed up
