REPORT: CENTRE YAO MING SET TO RETIRE AFTER EIGHT NBA SEASONS

Report: Centre Yao Ming set to retire after eight NBA seasons

"It appears the career of centre Yao Ming is about to come to an end.

According to a report by Yahoo! Sports, Yao has decided to retire after battling a slew of injuries over his eight years in the NBA.

The 30-year-old took the court for only five games last season and has struggled to recover from a tendon strain in his left leg.

The 7'6", 360-pound centre was the number one overall pick in the 2002 NBA Draft. In 486 career games, Yao averaged 19.0 points, 9.3 rebounds and 1.9 blocked shots."

What a bummer that he had to retire so soon in his career. I know from close sources that he suffered from several foot injuries that were potentially career ending, but he had some of the best surgeons in the business doing everything possible to extend his playing days.

Yao is everything a professional athelete should be; Skilled, humble, modest, hard-working and a great team-mate. All these great qualities while bearing the tremendous burden of being THE national hero for the largest country in the world.

^ Wasn't his contract structured so that he only got about $30 million and China got the rest over a period of years?

Not that I know of. Why would China get the rest of his salary over a period of time?

Yao had an expiring contract, so I don't understand the $200 million statement either. He was making $17M and had a $8M option.
