Official U.S. World Cup Squad
U.S national team manager Bob Bradley has revealed the 30 players who will start at the training camp in Princeton, N.J., before being cut down to the 23-man World Cup roster by June 1. Here it is via USsoccer.com:
GOALKEEPERS (3): Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Tim Howard (Everton), Marcus Hahnemann (Wolverhampton)
DEFENDERS (9): Carlos Bocanegra (Rennes), Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover), Jay DeMerit (Watford), Clarence Goodson (IK Start), Chad Marshall (Columbus Crew), Oguchi Onyewu (AC Milan), Heath Pearce (FC Dallas), Jonathan Spector (West Ham United)
MIDFIELDERS (12): DaMarcus Beasley (Rangers), Alejandro Bedoya (Örebro), Michael Bradley (Borussia Mönchengladbach), Ricardo Clark (Houston Dynamo), Clint Dempsey (Fulham), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy), Maurice Edu (Rangers), Benny Feilhaber (Aarhus), Stuart Holden (Bolton), Sacha Kljestan (Chivas USA), Robbie Rogers (Columbus Crew), José Torres (Pachuca)
FORWARDS (6): Jozy Altidore (Villarreal), Edson Buddle (Los Angeles Galaxy), Brian Ching (Houston Dynamo), Robbie Findley (Real Salt Lake), Herculez Gomez (Puebla), Eddie Johnson (Aris Thessaloniki)
The first thing everyone immediately notices is that Charlie Davies is not on the list. Seven months after that devestating car crash that killed a fellow passenger and nearly him, too, Davies has made an amazing comeback to even make his inclusion a possibility. But, alas, it wasn't meant to be and at 23 years old and with the drive he has, he will surely have more chances at future World Cups.
Even still, Bradley's excuse that Davies wasn't given full medical clearance by Sochaux to join the camp seems suspect. True, his club pays his wages and if they think it's a risk to let him go then they can fight it, but it's hard not to think that if Bradley really wanted him, he could have gotten him.
Also noticeably absent (to some) is Freddy Adu, who has been playing well in Greece, where club teammate Eddie Johnson did do enough to catch Bradley's wolf eye.
But it's the former MLS coach's continuing favoritism for the players working for his old employer that seems most troubling. Of the six forwards on the list, three of them are from MLS and a strong case could be made to leave all three at home. Unnecessary big man Brian Ching is just coming off an injury, Edson Buddle got off to a freakish and uncharacteristically hot start to the MLS season -- something that will probably be just a memory come World Cup time -- and Robbie Findley, well, is Robbie Findley.
Says Carter:
The inclusion of Bradley pets Sacha Kljestan and Robbie Rogers, players whose form in MLS has been marginal at best from last year into the current domestic season, isn't a welcomed sight but isn't surprising, either.
I can’t help but feel that Bradley is simply cutting down our chances of being great by using a logical selection process that only works for more dominant nations with an abundance of talent. We are not England, we cannot afford to leave weapons like Adu and Davies at home.
Of course, seven players from this list will be cut before the team travels to South Africa, so there's no use in getting too worked up over the more questionable inclusions just yet. But where's the fun in that?
