Cy Young Winner Lincecum to Make $650K in 2009
Wow. Baseball has very strict salary rules for players in their first 3-years. This is why agents like Scott Boras fight so hard for hug signing bonuses. This guy is the best young pitcher in the NL and he is only making twice the minimum salary. Meanwhile, 24-year old F1 driver Lewis Hamiltion will be making in the neighborhood of $30 million in 2009.
Giants sign Lincecum to $650K contract
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Tim Lincecum agreed to a $650,000, one-year contract with the San Francisco Giants on Thursday.
The 24-year-old Lincecum won the National League Cy Young Award in 2008, going 18-5 with a 2.62 ERA while striking out a major league-leading 265 batters in 227 innings.
He ranked third in the major leagues in ERA and winning percentage, and was second in the NL in ERA and victories.
Lincecum, who made his major league debut on May 6, 2007, is likely to be eligible for salary arbitration after the 2009 season.

The Giants are already trying to figure out how to sign him to a long enough contract that will allow them to avoid salary arbitration and keep him off the FA market for a few years. Giants fans would boycott the team in droves if they were to lose Lincecum.

Thats why the Twins have a pretty good pitching staff right now. We have a bunch of young guys with great arms that are still under rookie contract and getting payed shit.
Edit: "Shit" compared to all the other MLB players.

No doubt that Johan Santana has had a better "career" so far, but lets not forget that Lincecum's career hasn't been as long. How long did it take before Santana won his first Cy Young? You're definitely correct about Lincecum having "one" good year, but it was one "Cy Young" good year.
