Debate: Have Arsenal Lost Their Winning Mentality?

In the 2003-04 season Arsenal marched to the Premier League crown after going the whole season unbeaten and, in the process, attracted the moniker of the 'Invincibles.'

During that campaign the Gunners racked up memorable results over Manchester United at Old Trafford (0-0) just after the season's birth; an away victory at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea (2-1) at the turn of the year; a thrilling 4-2 win over Liverpool at home in April; before going on to lift the league title on the turf of their arch rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Arsenal stretched their unbeaten league run far into the following season. With a new campaign came a new nickname, and this time the press dubbed the north London side the 'Unbeatables,' that is, until, they came unstuck to a Manchester United side hellbent on not allowing them to get to the neat figure of half a century of games without a loss. Instead the number stood at 49.

Things can change in the space of four years. Only one key cog from the Invincible era now remains a Red and White: Kolo Toure, while other experienced, and proven winners, such as Sol Campbell, Patrick Vieira, Robert Pires, Fredrik Ljungberg, Dennis Bergkamp, and Thierry Henry, have been replaced with younger heads like Johan Djourou, Denilson, Samir Nasri, Emmanuel Eboue, Carlos Vela, and Nicklas Bendtner.

The midweek 2-0 Champions League loss in Portugal against FC Porto was Arsene Wenger's 700th in charge of the club, and it was also his 129th loss.

With a loss rate that is near enough ONE in THREE in the Premier League thus far this season, coupled with a ONE in FOUR in all competitions (SEVEN losses in 27 games) have the Gunners forgotten how to string a run of wins together?

Arsenal were famed for scoring in every single game. During the whole of last season they only failed to score in only one match, yet they have already ended SIX games without registering a goal. It is a fairly obvious notion that if you don't score, you won't win. So does the answer lie in a lack of firepower up top, and an over-reliance on players like Emmanuel Adebayor? Is Nicklas Bendtner even Arsenal reserves quality?

It has largely been assumed that Wenger was resting key personnel for a weekend match against Middlesbrough on Saturday lunchtime. Selecting the eleven that played on Wednesday evening is sending mixed messages to his squad that it is okay to not play for the win, which is a falsehood, and something Sir Alex Ferguson for example, would never try to instill within his side.

Even last season Wenger selected a makeshift side for Arsenal's FA Cup tie against Manchester United. A game that they were embarrassingly humbled by a 4-0 scoreline and Portuguese winger, no not Ronaldo, Nani even started showboating. This loss can easily be cited, along with the Eduardo da Silva leg-break, as turning points to Arsenal's season that ultimately left the club trophy-less.

There has been a long-running debate between fans of the Premier League over whom the better manager was: Sir Alex Ferguson, or Arsene Wenger. Defenders of the Scot often said that Ferguson was better because he knew how to retain a trophy, whereas Wenger was never able to win successive League titles. Now the Frenchman is hardly able to string together successive wins.

What are your thoughts on this subject? Do you think Arsenal have lost their winning mentality? Is the youth project at fault for this?
