The LeBron Sweepstakes - Is this Fair?
#11
Giving a nod to Chris Rock....."I'm not saying he's right, but I can understand".
Other than Cleveland winning the lottery to get LeBron, have they done much else to improve the team personnel-wise? One can argue it's LeBron with a lot of mismatched parts around him. Playing devil's advocate, he's putting Cavaliers' management/ownership on notice that they have to plan on being ready to make some major moves by the time the Summer of 2010 rolls around if they hope to keep him around. As the roster stands now, the team is not built to get past the Celtics and Lakers with any regularity.
Bill Simmons of espn.com brought up an interesting point - - the mania to get in position to snag LeBron is reducing the number of competitive teams between the Cavs and a potential title. The Knicks are obviously garbage going forwards, the Nets won't be making any moves to bring talent onboard as they clear cap space, and there's undoubtedly a few more teams out there that want to have as much cap room as possible when Summer 2010 rolls around.
Fundamentally, it is wrong to diss your current employer the way LBJ currently is. But until David Stern tells him otherwise, it's in his best interests as a player and as a marketing icon not to quell the rumors and action/inaction his impending free agency has created. And I wouldn't expect Stern to move on this fast, if at all. The publicity and interest this is creating for the league is golden from his perspective......
