Question German wines?

My Mercedes mechanic just moved into a new house and I'd like to get him a bottle of a German wine as a housewarming gift. I'm looking for a recommendation other than Liebfraumilch. (which they don't even drink in Germany, from what I understand )

It's been 15 years since I've shopped for any wine, so I thought I'd ask for any recommendations that you may have. I tried a little research on my own and came up with a few: Spätburgunder, Trollinger, Schwarzriesling, but since I don't drink, I have no idea what they are like.

Any help is appreciated!

Grunhauser is a well known German wine. Do a google shopping search.

Beer is indeed the more well-know import, but taking the guy a six-pack of some German beer just does not seem like a cool "new house" gift. We have a really astute local wine shop in my area - I'll just ask them for a recommendation. Thanks.

Germans are good for Pinot Gris and Riesling. I personally can't get enough of their Rieslings, especially their spatlese.

JJ Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese - probably the best deal in the entire wine world
2008 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese - SKU 1053766

i think all of the JJ Prum Spatlese are top-notch & pretty consistent year to year - i drink a bottle of wine, on average, once a week, and i'll drink that 1/2 the time.
