Sutcliffe Looks Back On Seven generations of 911

The Porsche 911 turns a half-century this year and celebrations are plentiful from our favorite journos and magazine counterparts. One of my favorite journos Steve Sutcliffe, takes us through a brief yet insightful look at the history of the iconic sports car, which has only been re-engineered by Porsche six times since its inception.

The Porsche 911 has evolved accordingly with the times and technology, but without diluting its DNA. In the video below, Sutcliffe drives the icons on a snowy, slippery, and tight handling circuit at Silverstone so sit back and enjoy.

Nice. Such an icon to stay so close to it's roots for so many years. Besides maybe a Jeep, what other car has really stayed that close? I would own and drive any year or variant of the 911 and be happy in the car. I can't say that about many cars.

corvette, mustang, F100/150, landcruiser, a few that I can think of besides jeep and 911 that have been true to their roots for more than 40 years, though mustang and corvette had some bad years, where their focus changed.

Range Rover x 40 years, not far behind.

My bad. I was meaning more of an exterior design. The vette and mustang have changed drastically in design over time. Range Rover maybe, as I don't know much about them. The Ford truck has changed a ton as well.

Yea, the 911 sets the standard of the word "icon" to the point of the 911 being a religion. The last 10 seconds of the video is the best where it morphs all the generations one after another. There is something very special about less electronics in a car. The first 2 generations of the 911 were designed to be THE best driving machine it can be without outside influences like lawyers,mpg,etc... These were cars designed by one man and not a board room and largely hand built before automation. We will never see this again and thats why they are in a breed of their own.

Great video. Sad that they had all those cars at their disposal and they only made an 8 minute video that didn't even feature them all.
