unlike in the US car manufacturers do not make cars to be placed on the dealership parking lot that then need to be discounted to be moved to make room for the next model year. Quiet frankly outside the US model year is hardly an issue and hardly anybody asks you what year it is. Most cars are made to order, I would say upward of 80%. try to go into a German car dealer ship and buy a new car on the spot. More often then not you cannot buy one which is the demo but have to order one. I do nto believe that porsche had a big overstock of cars that were unsold last year. Less profit yes but not big losses like US manufacturers who did not reduce production when demand was not there and had to move cars anyway. the biggest hit Porsche took was from buying VW options that they could either not re-sell or even worse were facing to have to execute because the turn the stock market took.

I'm pretty sure the bulk of their woes stemmed from financial alchemy.

Oddly enough my Regional Manager suggested last week that we convert to the German dealer model. One of each of the models and all cars are specifically ordered for the client. It's typical in Europe to wait for three or four months even for more pedestial cars like a base Boxster. I laughed long and hard after that conversation.

I thought the whole point of VW owning them was so they didn't have to concentrate on things like building a lot of cars and making huge profits

i honestly dont like the idea of Porsche making more models just to sell more cars. they should stick to doing what they do best, which is to produce sports cars. The Cayenne is a great car and should still be produced, but other types of cars being put into production should not be on their minds.

More production, the more the likely chance you've got a factory defect in your 911 , Cayenne, Panamera , Cayman and Boxster

They need to build a small 4 seater coupe, something performance oriented, yet economical that will compete with the likes of Mini Cooper S, Fiat 500 Abarth, Golf GTI (R32), Ford Escort Cosworths etc...
I believe it would sell.
Panamera is a failure from the start.
