The King of All Race Cars - the 917/30 up close
Here are a few shots I took of the 917/30 that was part of the Porsche exhibition at this years Monterey Historics. I spent a good 15 minutes staring at this awesome machine from many angles. I could not believe how small it is....such a small car with 1,100 - 1,500 hp (depending on boost) is unbelievable. Enjoy

Two things:
1) Thanks for this, I absolutely love this car and it will always have a special place in my heart. I have purchased all the Can Am DVDs and books that I could find. If there is ever one of those ridiculously priced 1/8th models of this car, then I will think very, very seriously about purchasing it. This was one of the true 'hero cars' that was driven by real men.
2) I knew you were in a hunt for a a great Saudi quote, but that one takes the cake.

I'm with you on the 917/30 thing John Those and the Gulf 917k's will always be the ultimate machines in my book.
Even though this was not one of the Donahue cars, I still felt a sense of presence and awe standing near this machine that no other car at this year's historics could match. That is saying quite a bit considering there were 3 Gulf 917k's there racing this year.

Before this car, there was the 917/10. Which is more or less the same thing, only shorter. I couldn't imagine how hairy it must've been lightin the wick down the back straight at Riverside in either one of these beasts, talk about a handful.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the 917 still holds the fastest lap time EVER recorded at LeMans (a 3:13 , recorded in practice for the 67 or 68 race !). This was pre-kink Mulsanne straight, but unreal just the same.
