Slam on the brakes, and you're likely to cause an even worse accident than if you try to negotiate your way through it.

Most drivers lift and try to find a clear spot. Some keep their foot in it and hope for the best. Those who keep on it generally end up in front.

In a word, "that's racing". If you're not aggressive, you lose. It's a damn shame when drivers die, but this isn't exactly figure skating.
