YouTube - McLaren MP4-12C GT3 breaks cover in first tests
Following last year's teaser, McLaren has officially unveiled the new MP4-12C GT3.
Jointly developed with CRS Racing, the GT3 wears a composite body with a new front splitter, revised side skirts, and an aggressive rear diffuser. Elsewhere, there are wider front fenders, carbon fiber canards, and a fixed rear wing.
Power is provided by a twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 which has been "tuned to race specification." Details weren't released, but the engine is connected to a new Ricardo paddle-shift transmission which promises near instantaneous gear changes.
In terms of handling, the car is equipped with a bespoke suspension which eschews the ProActive Chassis Control System for race-specific dampers and anti-roll bars. Additionally, there's a revised electronics package and a high performance braking system with Akebono callipers.
According to Chief Test Driver Chris Goodwin, "Those who have seen the new MP4-12C production car won't be surprised to learn that immense attention to detail has been applied in developing the GT3 version. Quality is a watchword. We know that our potential customers will expect McLaren GT to deliver a competitive car right out of the box and, starting now with a program covering aerodynamics development and durability testing, we are determined to do just that."
The MP4-12C GT3 will embark on a series of tests at FIA approved tracks across Europe, before being offered to private racing teams in 2012.
In related news, the McLaren GT racing team signed 26-year old Portuguese driver Álvaro Parente. He is the first of six drivers who will be added by mid-2011.
