McLaren May Use Innovative Exhaust System

Well, I am getting a bit impatient about what McLaren "may do."

I wouldn't be surprised if they copied it.

Again, take away the wings, allow as much HP as they want, regulate the ECU and tire width/compounds, and you'll have EPIC racing. Teams would only have to worry about mechanical grip since aero would be limited to things like the undertray and surface shapes. Offer different engine formulae such as an NA V8 limited to 2.4L, a turbo I4 limited to 1.5L, etc. Allow hybrid technologies like KERS, allow diesel, etc. The thing killing F1 by making it a procession is the aero mess. Strip away wings and the problem is solved.

They actually have simplified the aero on the cars Chris.

Here's the F2008.

And here's the F150.

My solution: Any HP. Any engine config. Any downforce config. Limit tire compound/size only.

No TC, no electronic gearboxes or diffs, no in-cockpit or remote mixture or boost control. The cheaper the car is, the larger point award the team gets at the beginning of the season.

Let the best engineers and the best drivers win. The end.

This works, but there's too much to regulate. By taking the wings away, you eliminate any way of gaining cheap downforce. Also, you address cost controls, but who actually verifies budgets? You know F1 well enough to know that's not happening. Agreed about the HP, engine config, etc. Create a spec tire (with an esp. hard compound) and everyone will have to regulate their HP and suspension to work, neither of which is affected by the "dirty air" in front of them. You'd see a lot more sideways action as well as 4-wheel drifts...
