Following a three-year factory hiatus, Cadillac on Monday announced its return to the SCCA World Challenge series for the 2011 season.
The factory Cadillac team competed previously in the series’ GT class with CTS-V sedans from 2004 to 2007 and accumulated two manufacturer’s championships and one driver’s championship. The CTS-Vs remained in World Challenge on a privateer basis in 2008 with Team Remington Cadillac.
For its 2011 assault, the factory Cadillac team will campaign two CTS-V coupes in the GT class prepared by longtime General Motors racing partner Pratt & Miller. Handling driving duties will be 2005 World Challenge GT drivers' champion Andy Pilgrim, who returns to the Cadillac team following two seasons of driving a Volvo S60 for K-Pax Racing in the series. Three-time American Le Mans Series GT1 champ and Corvette Racing stalwart Johnny O’Connell will pilot the other CTS-V.
“The SCCA World Challenge lends itself well to a natural transfer of knowledge,” said Jim Campbell, GM's vice president for performance vehicles and motorsports. "The series will be become a key test bed for Cadillac. We anticipate using what we learn on the race track to ensure V-series stays on the cutting-edge of performance.”
The 2011 World Challenge season kicks off with a double-header scheduled for the weekend of March 25 on the streets of St. Petersburg, Fla.
