Is it wrong to consider the possibility that Reubens race was undermined by the team to save Jense from having to take the fight to Abu Dhabi?

I think Rubens just didn't have the pace in his first stint to stay ahead of Webber. Rubens had a blisteringly fast first pit stop (4.1 sec) while Webber's pit crew took nearly twice as long on the first stop but Webber had no problem creating a larger gap over the rest of the field once he had some clean air.
