Shortly before the start of the 1986 F1 season, this person was in an automobile accident with F1 team owner Sir Frank Williams on the way from the Paul Ricard Circuit in southern France to the Nice airport, causing this person only minor injuries but leaving Williams, who was driving, paralysed.

Who is he??

Wrong. The key word is "Historic". I'll give you a few hints. He's still alive and runs a very well-known road racing team with an alcoholic beverage sponsor's logo covering 3/4ths of the car. One last hint, the driver I'm talking about is from Minneapolis.

I went out of my way to make sure this was a good one.

A few more hints that hopefully won't give it away: the owner of this ALMS team named the team after the neighborhood he grew up in when he lived in Minneapolis. Oh, and having a subscription to Automobile magazine might come in handy for answering this.
