Lytro cameras ... the heck?

Lytro

Anyone heard of these before?

Sounds interesting, but too much marketing gibberish and I can't figure out wtf is actually happening in them.

Also not impressive is their non flexible approach. Built-in battery, built-in memory, proprietary file format, no Windows support.

Cheap novelty or revolution?

Weird. I'd call it a toy at best.

I've got to admit that I'd love a chance to play with one and the price isn't too crazy, but it's not something I'd actually use all that often.

I'm guessing it works by taking a bunch of photos all at once and then stitching all of the data together inside the processor to give you the ability to adjust everything after the fact.

Ability to edit image focus after the fact is pretty unique. Packaging appeals to the hipster doofus, but the tech seems legit.

"light field sensor" voodoo witchcraft I think. But changing focus point after the fact is way cool. Of course with an F2 lens, you've always got a very shallow DOF. And no ISO adjustment so I wonder what standard ISO is in it. And at $400, it can't be all that big (physical size)of a sensor....

Still, I agree with Alex, it sure would be a cool toy. And at that price, I might just wanna be a hipster doofus once in a while too.

losing the abilityt to control depth of field, and everything in essence being F2, makes this a creative toy, but not a serious photographers tool.

Hi,

I want one, but, I can't have one.

A few important reminders

It's a global revolution but we
only ship to the US for now

You need a Mac to import
and edit your pictures
*Tell me when Windows is ready

Cameras start shipping
in early 2012
:/

Cheers,
Nik

i think this would be cool for shooting cars... focus on one blur out another...

but i have to admit the design is a bit impractical
