Nikon might be comparable to Canon when it comes to pictures (might), but when it comes to video, Canon OWNS big time.
YouTube - Nikon d90 vs Canon 7D video quality Multi angle and slow mo
I voted Canon 100% all the way.
Also, Porsche uses Cannons.

I shoot Nikon, but that decision was made because I got a extremely good deal on a new D2Xs some years ago. The one part that has been missing in Nikon's lineup until now is the primes. But in the last year or so, Nikon has really stepped up it's game and released some amazing primes, 24 1.4, 35 1.4 and the updated 85mm G.
But Nikon kills Canon when it comes to the flash system, Nikon's CLS is nothing short of amazing, I have several of their speedlights and couldn't be happier. I have made myself a DIY ringflash setup with their macro flash kit, R1C1 with 6x flash heads, and for portraits it is incredible.
I now shoot a D700 with assorted glass

I will agree that the Canon video blows Nikon out of the water. I shot a Petit Le Mans video for a blog on my D5000 and it was mediocre at best.
While doing that, I ran into JF Musial who was filming for Porsche and I'm pretty sure most of his crew was shooting with lightly modified 7D's. The results were this - which the result alone almost sold me on Canon. They did an awesome job!

All of these pictures were taken with a Canon EOS (Porsche has the photo exifs on their press site).
ALL taken with Canons.

For me, Nikon DSLR and lenses for sure. I had an older D100, and got a D90 last year and I've never really wished it could do something it can't (note: I don't use it for video). I mostly went that route because my pops has been shooting Nikon in various forms since I was born, and also has a ton of lenses that he's happy to meet up and trade back and forth with mine, so it's a no-brainer.
In fact, if I suddenly had the seemingly limitless wherewithal that some of you guys on here have, the first thing I'd do (even before a crazy home, more cars, etc.) would be walking into B&H and saying, "give me the Nikon lineup, from top to bottom". I'm almost more jealous of a D3X SLR than a McLaren SLR
But...... I actually use Canon for point-and-shoot and video. I've got an S90 for pocket use, and I've used PowerShots for years. And I've been using a Canon HV30 for HD video. I really like them, although I just got a Sony CX to try and get away from miniDV. In fact, I'm quite tempted by the G12 from Santa this year, the G11 is a great camera.
Summary: I love Nikon, and when I see other people with the gold and black neck strap, I automatically know they're cool . Canon makes some good stuff too. I know a lot of people with Porsches and Ferraris
