Looking to purchase my first DSLR, couple questions..

I am currently looking at purchasing a Cannon 30D, mainly for shooting stills and action shots.

Not looking to spend a ton on the camera or lenses, but from what I gather this is a stout body, I have seen them go for about $300-500 with certain lenses.

What is a good multipurpose lens for my uses?

Any other models I should consider as well?

Any things I should avoid?

TIA

The 30D is a decent camera. But you might as well buy the 5D MkII, 24-70 f/2.8L, and 70-200 f/2.8L USM. Yes, I know that's about $5K above your budget but after the photography bug bites you, you'll buy a bunch of other stuff on the way to eventually having that combo so you might as well save some money in the long run and buy that kit now.

Agreed with what Alzilla said. I bought my XSi with kit lens a few years back... then I bought a ultra wide angle lens.. then another, then replaced that with a 16-50mm and all this time what I have really wanted is the 5D Mk II with 24-70 and 35mm f/1.4 ... will get that eventually, should have just held out half a few years with my P&S and bought that combo.

Well let me get this out of the way for you guys... The 5D Mk. II is out of the question... Budget is $400 max.

I am looking for something better than a FujiFilm FinePix S700.

The 30D seems to be the best bang for the buck DSLR at the moment, correct me if I am wrong.

Yeah don't go crazy with the 5D.

30D is not bad, but you will not get a camera+lens under 400$. Camera is 400$, lens will be at least that much.

What do you want to shoot? Conditions?

Well naturally I'll be shooting cars in outdoor and indoor conditions, people, action events, things like that. Natural and artificial lighting. Might even do some closer still shots.

I have seen quit a few 30D's go through ebay for around $400, with lens, case, strap, manual, box, cards, etc..

At this point looking to figure out what size lens would be best.

Nice link Alzilla, I could most likely write something similar about modifying a car!

If I can't get a used 30D and a good lens for ~$400, what can I get?
